The poems in Christopher X. Shade’s book Shield the Joyous “engage in magical thinking, exuding wonderment toward death,” says poet Joseph O. Legaspi. This follows Christopher’s 2019 novel The Good Mother of Marseille, its search through turbulent Marseille for belonging. Shield the Joyous is deeply touching in its vulnerability and often entertaining. Christopher lives in New York City and is co-founder and co-editor of Cagibi, at cagibilit.com, a journal of poetry and prose. Raised in the South, he now lives in New York City.
